What is a domain name or a fully qualified domain name??
A domain name tells people (and the computers they use) how to find
your homepage on the Internet. Each domain name is assigned to a
numerical IP (Internet Protocol) address by your host provider.
Since people remember names better than numbers, the domain name, eg.
www.yourname.com, translates this number into words.
What is a domain registration?
A domain registration is a 'right to use' for a given domain. Domain
registrations are charged on yearly basis. Please see our domain
registration section for domain registration charges.
The extension at the end of your domain usually distinguished what
type of web site you have.
.COM stands for commercial
.NET stands for network
.ORG stands for Organization
.Biz stands for Business
How is a domain registered?
Generally, the organization that wants to register a domain ( which
might be an individual), visits our website, requests a particular
domain name, provides some contact information, provides some other
information which includes a chosen password, and/or DNS servers and
payment information.
On receiving the payment we send the appropriate information/request
to the registry to complete the registration.
What is a WHOIS record?
For most domains, much of the contact information provided during
the registration process is put into a public whois record.
Why should I register a Domain Name?
A domain name adds a very exclusive and professional identity to
your web site and your e-mail address. It is also very practical.
Having a domain name means that no matter where you host your web
pages, people can always find you at the same address. (www.mydomain.com)
Reserving your domain name also guarantees that no one else can
reserve it and conduct business using your company name! The
InterNIC does not refer to business registrations, acts of
incorporation, etc. in granting domain names. It grants domain names
on a first come first serve basis only. For this reason alone, you
should consider protecting your company name by registering it's
domain name before someone else does.
Do I own the Domain Name once I register it?
Yes. We register the domain name in your name and you are the owner
of the name for the number of years your register it for, from the
date of registration. After that period, you will be invited to
renew the domain name for a period of 1 or more years. You will
always have the option to renew the domain name. You are registered
as the Administrative Contact and have the final say in any
activities regarding your domain name, for as long as you are the
registered, paid owner.
How will I be able to tell if my desired domain name is already
taken?
Before registering a domain name you will first have to do a "whois"
search to see if your requested domain name is available. If the
domain search request returns without a match, you will be able to
register that domain name.
What if my desired name is the same as a trademarked name?
Generally, if you've registered the name in good faith, it's not a
name belonging to an internationally known company, and you can show
that you have a legitimate reason to use that name then you will
likely to be able to keep that name. That may not be the case if it
can be shown that you purchased the name for the express purpose of
re-selling it to a company with a legitimate claim to the name.
What are the valid characters for a domain name and how long can
it be?
The only valid characters for a domain name are letters, numbers and
a hyphen "-". Other special characters like the underscore "_" or an
exclamation mark "!" are NOT permitted.
Example: your name.com (incorrect - no spaces allowed)
Example: your-name.com (is correct)
A domain name can be up to 67 characters long -- including the 4
characters used to identify the Top Level Domain (.NET, .COM, .ORG,
or .EDU). Do not type the www. before your domain name when
registering.
Why can't I register for a domain that is already expired?
In some cases, domain names may be kept by domain registrar even
after it has expired because a.) payment for the domain is not
current, b.) the domain name is involved in a trademark dispute, or
c.) the domain is pending server activation. As long as it is kept
by Network Solutions, we will not be able to register it for you.
You will have to contact domain registrar for more information about
the domain.
Does India Internets host anything other than the top level
(.com, .org and .net) domains, such as international domains?
India Internets does support the hosting of international domains
(such as .co.uk, .co.in, .jp, etc.).
Once I have a domain name secured, how long may I use it?
If there are no trademark disputes, your secured domain name will be
yours for as long as you maintain the yearly registration fees.
How do I change the DNS or Contact Information for my domain
name?
You may change the DNS information for your domain name by accessing
the Domain Admin Panel at our homepage. If you have forgotten your
password, just click on the Send Password link below the login
screen and your password will be emailed to you immediately.
Why doesn't my domain show up in whois search?
Remember that the Whois information for a domain can take up to 48
hours to propagate worldwide, so it may not be visible until then.
Can I register a .com, .net or .org domain name for me even if I
am not a US resident or organization?
Yes. You do not have to be a US resident or own a US organization to
have a .com, .net or .org address. You can reside anywhere and
conduct business anywhere. We register domain names for individuals
and organizations globally.
Can I Register More Than One Domain Name?
Yes. You can register as many domain names as you wish. Many
companies prefer to register the same domain name with .com, Net and
.org to protect their organization name, trademarks and product
identity, variations on names etc. Many names are reserved in
anticipation of future use.
O.K. Lets say I've registered a Domain Name...where do I go from
here?
Having a domain name does not mean you have somewhere to put your
web pages. Remember, a domain name is a way to remember an address
without knowing the numbers that actually make up the address.
Having a domain name is comparable to having a terrific sign for
your business. Now you need an address where you can hang your sign
(and store your web pages!). You can order a web hosting package
from us or you can choose any other company offering hosting
services. You are not obligated to host with us because we register
your domain name. We can change the nameservers of your domain or
you can change them yourself. We do not charge extra to do that.
When will my domain be live on the Internet?
When a new domain is first registered it can take 24-36 hours for
the name to be fully updated or "propogated" across the Internet.
This is the case for any domain name registered through any
registrar because all the Internet Service providers update their
zone registry files every 12-36 hours.
Can I access my domain without the "www" in front?
Yes, you will be able to access the domain address with or without
the "www" in front of the domain name. Example: [http://www.yourname.com]
or [http://your-name.com] is acceptable, whichever you prefer.
What is the procedure for renewing domain names?
Domains must be renewed annually. You may choose to pay for multiple
years of registration up front if you don't want to have to worry
about renewing your names once a year. You will receive automated
email warnings regarding the need to renew your domain name
registration 30 days before expiration and 7 days before expiration.
It is important that you keep your email address up to date with us
so that you are certain to receive these warnings. You may determine
if we have the right email address by conducting a domain query for
your own names and viewing the corresponding billing email address
that is shown in the registrant results. The query results for your
own domain names will also show you the scheduled expiration date
for the name.
How many domain Names can I register?
You can register as many as you like provided they are available to
be booked. In all circumstances you will have to adopt the same
process of domain registration, which you were adapting to book a
single domain.
How long is it before my domain is active?
Once the InterNIC announces that your domain name has been
registered (or transferred, if applicable), it usually takes about
72-hours before it is active. All Internet providers must update
their records (DNS tables) to reflect the new site's location.
